20.07.2011 Approval of the Project for an Integrated Urban Transport in Sofia, the second major project under Operational Programme Regional Development

On 20.07.2011 the second major project within the meaning of Article 39 of Council Regulation (EC) No 1083/2006 implemented under scheme BG161PO001/1.5-02/2010 Support for an Integrated Public Transport in Sofia City Municipality financed by Operational Programme Regional Development  2007-2013 was approved for funding.

The scheme BG161PO001/1.5-02/2010 Support for an Integrated Urban Transport in Sofia City Municipality was announced on 4 February 2011 through a direct grant procedure with a specific beneficiary, i.e. Sofia City Municipality. The project proposal was submitted on 20 May 2011. 
 
The project is part of the overall strategy of Sofia City Municipality for the development of urban transport based on accelerated building of the underground system and the streamlining of the other urban transport means so that people can use them to travel quickly and comfortably to the underground stations. The following measures will be financed under the project: upgrade and rehabilitation of tramway tracks (rehabilitation of the tramway track at Bulgaria Boulevard and the creation of a new tramway track from Seminariyata to Darvenitsa); the mounting of 600 electronic remotely controlled passenger information boards providing real-time information to the passengers; the creation of a pilot smart system of traffic control for 20 key junctions in Sofia which gives priority to public transport means; the delivery of 50 new trolleys for lines 1, 2, 5 and 9; the conduct of marketing and legal research of the opportunities for concession of the shelters of urban transport  stops.

The total amount of funds allocated is 122 482 833.08 BGN of which:

  • 97 791 500.00 BGN in grant funds (85% co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund and 15% from the national budget)
  • 24 691 333.08 BGN in own contribution of the applicant.

The project dossier will be submitted to the European Commission for approval in compliance with Council Regulation (EC) No 1083/2006.
