18.08.2011 The first major project under OPRD approved by the EC

On 16.08.2011 by Commission Decision C(2011) 5988 the European Commission approved the project entitled Integrated urban transport in Bourgas, which is the first major project under Operational Programme Regional Development 2007-2013 (OPRD) within the meaning of Article 39 of Council Regulation (EC) No 1083/2006.

On 15.11.2010 the project was approved for financing by the Managing Authority of OPRD under scheme BG161PO001/1.5-01/2010 Support for integrated urban transport in Bourgas Municipality.

The grant amount approved by the European Commission is 51 816 427 EUR and it covers fully the shortage of funds under this project. 85% of the amount is the contribution of the European Regional Development Fund and 15% of the amount is the contribution from the national budget. The total value of the project is 67 071 840 EUR.

The project provides for a number of measures for the modernization of the urban transport and for the promotion of alternatives transportation means such as the following:

  • upgrade of the rolling stock and the maintenance facilities,
  • building of a central bus stop and upgrade of the bus terminals,
  • introduction of a new optimized and attractive bus route map and a bus rapid transit system,
  • creation of cycle lanes and pedestrian overpasses,
  • introduction of an integrated e-ticketing system and a real time passenger information at bus stops and on the buses,
  • a single traffic control and management centre supported by systems for video surveillance and control of public transport,
a bus priority system at traffic signals.
